Our therapists provide a range of private counselling and psychological services for individuals, families and couples for a range of mental health concerns. Our therapists use therapeutic approaches that have been validated through research as well as through lived and clinical experiences.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
Counselling is an active process in which you are assisted to understand more fully the difficulties you are experiencing. It is a chance to talk freely and in confidence with a supportive, impartial and non-judgemental professional. For some, skills to support stability can be needed before exploring and understanding difficulties.
Confidentiality is important. Anything you say to an Essentia Health therapist will not be disclosed except if you indicate risk of harm to yourself or to somebody else. Then our clinicians may be professionally and legally obliged to inform others.
Sharing troubles, exploring options, discussing strategies, developing a plan, building supports, eliciting clarity and encouraging strengths are some of the functions of counselling. Your decisions, culture, religious beliefs and personal values will be respected.
Counselling may be short or long-term. It can involve dealing with highly emotive issues or breaking long-standing patterns of behaviour. It can be hard work and may require a number of visits.
Since counselling is a very personal experience you are encouraged to let your individual therapist know if you don’t feel comfortable for any reason. Together the issue may be resolved or a referral to another counsellor can be arranged.
WHAT ISSUES CAN WORKING WITH AN ESSENTIA HEALTH THERAPIST HELP WITH?
Our therapists use an assortment of evidence-based treatments to help people improve their lives. Most commonly, the therapy our therapists use is often referred to as psychotherapy or talk therapy. If you are not ready to talk about things that may be painful and triggering, our team are well versed in stabilisation based approaches including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). There are many different styles of therapy and your therapist will choose the type that best addresses the person’s problem and best fits the individual’s characteristics and preferences.
Some of the common types of therapy our therapists use includes cognitive, cognitive-behavioural, acceptance and commitment therapy, interpersonal, dialectical behaviour therapy, somatic trauma therapy, stabilisation based therapy and a combination of a few therapy styles. For some conditions, therapy and medication are a treatment combination that works best. For people who benefit from medication, our team works with your doctors, paediatricians and psychiatrists to support your overall treatment.
